No visit to Melbourne would be complete without trying at least one of the coffee houses...

This is a city full of character. The residents here don’t settle for bland - from the interesting Victorian styled architecture to an inspiring arts and music scene. Independent businesses flourish here and nowhere is this more apparent than with the abundance of fantastic coffee outlets dotted in every neighbourhood around the city. The pride in quality and service with a real understanding on the importance to trade ethically to bridge the gap between farmer and consumer. This is what makes Melbourne any coffee lovers dream city.

Many happy coffee fuelled days down, here's my selection of the best coffee haunts in town.

*for consistency, I’ve based each coffee house on a flat white.

Brother Baba Budan

Located on Little Bourke Street in the heart of the city is Brother Baba Budan - just one part of the Seven Seeds family. It’s a smaller quirky space with bar stools hung overhead from the ceiling. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in quality. Beans are sourced ethically from all corners of the globe with the leading espresso blend being made up of 50% Brazil Progresso, 25% Colombia Buesaco and 25% Colombia Samaniego. The service is fast and friendly and the coffee is delightful.

Shortstop Coffee & Donuts

Located in the heart of Melbourne on Sutherland Street, the interior is bright and welcoming and has a constant homely aroma of freshly baked treats. Coffee and donuts. The all-time perfect combination right?

The donuts are made fresh on-site throughout the day, using high-quality, natural ingredients. Their coffee is sourced from the best specialty roasters and paired with delicious organic milk. Full of flavour and silky smooth.

I highly recommend the Maple Walnut & Brown Butter.

Dukes Coffee Roasters (Ross House)

With a separate roastery and training site nearby, Dukes produces daily, freshly roasted and beautiful coffee for its Ross House store. The interior is warm and cosy and with peak time queues leading out of the door, it’s clear that there’s quality being served. I can vouch for that.

Their most popular Espresso Blend is currently composed of the following coffees:

Brazil Sao Joao
Nicaragua La Hammonia
Colombia Hererra Planadas
Ethiopia Sasaba

Proud Mary

You’ll find Proud Mary Café sitting in a backstreet of the old industrial area of Collingwood, beneath two towering brick smokestacks. Wall to wall exposed brick with large windows on every side create a bright and airy space with a lively atmosphere. They hold a variety of Proud Mary's own blends and single origins, roasted a block away at Aunty Peg’s, the sister coffee house and roastery. Founder of Proud Mary, Nolan Hirte is now recognised as a pioneer of the specialty coffee industry in Australia so be trusting you’re in safe hands here.

Keep an eye out for that breakfast menu!

Growers Espresso

Located in Fitzroy North, Growers Espresso is a small coffee roastery and espresso bar which focuses on interesting specialty coffees from around the world in addition to its Australian grown Eureka Coffee brand. The owner's family was involved in coffee growing in the Byron Bay hinterland so there is a strong appreciation of the grower.

Exposed brick walls and warm wood furnishings makes this one a great place to relax, get spot of lunch and drink some fine coffee!

Axil Coffee Roasters

Head east from the CBD and you’ll find this popular spot on Burwood Road in Hawthorn. The roastery was created 6 years ago by twice Australian barista champion Dave Makin & his wife Zoe. The roastery sits at the back end of the bright and modern coffee bar and restaurant. They source their own coffees directly from the farms and also can boast that two of the top six baristas in Australia are working the bar. Food does not come second place to the coffee, it's on a world class level too. I recommend the zucchini, corn & halloumi fritters!
